20% of playable characters in WWE 2K22 are already off the circuit

Just over a week away from the game’s release, the veil has been lifted on the cast of WWE 2K22. Insiders may have been surprised to see names in this list that are no longer with the company. Some figures had even left it in April 2021, almost a year ago.

The launch of WWE 2K22 will be an event no matter what. Unlike other sports simulations for which it seems inconceivable not to release a title per year, this franchise had been put into hibernation for 2021. The fault of a 2020 edition deemed laughable, especially for its technical part.

For WWE 2K22, if the historic Visual Concepts studio remains in charge of development, Patrick Gilmore, former head of Double Helix, has been called in to help. And even before knowing if the new copy will be more presentable than the previous one, something is already wrong in the ring.

By 2021, more than 100 wrestlers had left WWE

It is on March 11 that must appear WWE 2K22 on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series and PC. Ten days before this release, the cast of characters available at launch has just been revealed. The problem is that in this very extensive list, 34 wrestlers are no longer part of WWE. Which represents 20% of the characters present in the game.

Much like Konami with its now extinct PES series, 2K Sports and Visual Concepts can be said to have fallen short. But if, in the case of some wrestlers, their departure may have appeared too recent to be taken into account (Cesaro), others (Billie Kay, Peyton Royce) had nevertheless left the company in April 2021.

We can say that the magic of the updates will be able to restore order in all that, but the risk would then be taken to reduce the pleasures even more. As a reminder, more than 100 wrestlers were released from their WWE contract last year. Reassuring or not, a season pass should swell the workforce of the game. Here are the characters (with their respective scores) that we can embody in WWE 2K22 in defiance of respect for reality:

  • Alexander Wolfe: 77
