Activision explains why Call of Duty Warzone doesn’t have map rotation

Asked about the possibility of offering more cards in call of duty warzone as part of a rotation, a high-ranking member of Activision replied that such is the will of the studios. Only, the other cards represent such a weight that the experience would be severely altered.

Repetitive activities can be fun and addictive. In the case of Call of Duty: Warzone, online confrontations present an unpleasant feeling of deja vu due to the impossibility of fighting on new environments. Gameplay efficiency can diminish that feeling of doing the same thing over and over again, but if players could switch maps to battle, they sure wouldn’t.

Broadcaster TeeP was recently able to speak for half an hour with Josh Bridge, Vice President of Design at Activision. Among other things, the latter was asked if a rotation of the cards could be put in place to Call of Duty: Warzoneto allow to go from Caldera to Verdansk, the previous map.

Why no map rotation in Warzone? “completely insane” installation sizes

Josh Bridge started by answering (in the 29th minute) that the wish of the studios is to allow a rotation of the cards.

“We want it. We all want it”.

But if this rotation is technically possible, it is this same technique which would make the execution frustrating, and therefore not very applicable in the current state of affairs.

“There is actually a technical problem. The install and reinstall sizes are absolutely insane. […] If we got out of Caldera and said OK, we’re going to land in Verdansk, that would mean more or less a Warzone-sized reload. And every time we’ve done that, well, we’ve lost players. »

Further, Josh Bridge recalls the limits of the PS4, because it would not be a question of leaving the owners of the machine on the floor under the pretext that Warzone is playable on PS5.

“I don’t think that right now you can’t fit anything other than Warzone and Modern [Warfare] on a base PS4. »

Good news though, Activision is working on getting that desired rotation.

“That’s why we looked to the future and put a lot of effort into solving this problem on a technical level in order to have this rotation. We’ve really looked into it, and we’ll get to that later, but that’s ultimately our goal, which is to keep experiences fresh and varied. »
