Back to the future of the past

Unlike the sequel game, River City Girls Zero is not an original WayForward creation. It is actually the portage ofe 新・熱血硬派くにおたちの挽歌 (Shin Nekketsu Koha: Kunio-tachi no Banka), a production by the Almanic studio for the publisher Technos Japan released in 1994 on the Super Famicom, exclusively in Japan. It is in this SNES episode that the two female protagonists Kyoko and Misako make their first appearance as the girlfriends of the characters Kunio and Riki, the two stars of the franchise. Kunio-kun.

River City Girls Zero is in a way the Western version of the game, translated several decades after its original release, and reintegrated into the modern timeline of the series… A somewhat narrow story, in short. Note that this port will enjoy new animated cutscenes and a new musical theme.

Fight as a couple

Four characters are thus playable during this pure juice beat’em’all, with a style radically different from previous episodes of the franchise. This episode sees Kunio and Riki unjustly locked up in a reformatory for a dark case of a car accident—after escaping from this youth prison, the pair team up with their friends Kyoko and Misako to lift the veil behind this conspiracy. . Yoshihisa Kishimoto, the legendary creator of the first game Kunio-kun, returned to service for this special episode, after being away from the series for just under a decade.
