an over-equipped e-bike with a certain weight

The Eleglide T1 Step-Thru is an electric bike under 1000 euros, quite complete with many accessories included. But what is it really worth? Here’s our take on it.

Eleglide is a brand that is starting to make a name for itself in urban mobility, sold in France, it is positioned with a more than correct quality/price ratio. The electric bike Eleglide T1 Step-Thru is a VTC-type adult electric bike, which seems quite similar to the NAKAMURA E-Crossover V.

Delivered in a box almost 90% assembled, the Eleglide T1 Step-Thru will be on the road very quickly, because finishing the assembly will only take you about fifteen minutes! The manufacturer also delivers all the keys necessary for assembly.

Before going further, it is important to specify that this electric bike is CE approved EN15194 for road use in France. Indeed, like a good number of electric bikes from Asia, the latter has the possibility of having an accelerator trigger, so as not to pedal like on a scooter or a scooter. Although supplied, it is not mounted directly on the bike, as this is not authorized in France, finally it is quite vague.

Once assembled, this Eleglide T1 Step-Thru offers a modern, slightly vintage design with a 17-inch open V-frame, and different color accents.

One thing is certain, Eleglide has not skimped on the accessories that are usually optional for this price! We thus find a luggage rack with integrated fixing system, front and rear LED lighting directly connected to the battery, the one at the rear reacting even to braking or even a kickstand and metal mudguards, not to mention the saddle. SR quite comfortable especially if you do long distances!

On the handlebars, we have in the center a large bright screen that can be read even in the sun, showing the usual information (speed, assistance mode, lighting activated, number of kilometers, etc.). On the left handle, there is a small remote control to turn on the bike, change assistance mode or turn on the lights. While on the right handle we find the 7 speeds of the Shimano derailleur at the rear, which is quite pleasant. Note that the front fork is telescopic with a mechanical shock absorber with lockout. So you can lock it on flat roads for fast driving or unlock it on rough paths for steady driving. Note that the brakes are mechanical disc front and rear.

The Eleglide T1 Step-Thru includes in the rear wheel a 250W brushless motor with 50Nm torque which provides you with constant and strong power and allows the bike to accelerate up to 25km/h. With a removable, frame-integrated 12.5 Ah (450 Wh) lithium-ion battery, it can travel up to 100 km, which is ideal for your long journey. It offers 2 driving modes (assist or manual) and 5 speed levels (12, 16, 20, 23 and 25 km/h).

This e-bike is equipped with 27.5 inch CST tires that can adapt to a variety of road surfaces, but also go smoothly and easily over bumps.

Eleglide T1 Step-Thru: fun to drive

The Eleglide T1 Step-Thru is a stylish and comfortable bike. It is simple and pleasant to use. Once launched, the position is correct and easily adjustable via the tilt of the handlebars and the height of the saddle.

On the road, it behaves quite well, even on a rough road thanks to its fork with two shock absorbers, on the other hand it is a little more restless on a path or in the forest, but note that this is quite normal. The bike swallows the false flats without problem, on the other hand the coasts with a significant slope are more complicated!

The assistance is on the other hand a little strange, indeed with its 5 levels of speed, one sometimes has the impression of having a little choppy driving. As much up to level 3, it remains suitable, as much after, it is the assistance which takes precedence over your pedaling forcing you to accelerate the pace! On a flat road, it can be a little destabilizing, especially since the engine is quite nervous.

But for us the biggest negative weight remains its weight. Indeed, the machine weighs no less than 26 kg, so much to say that it’s heavy, even very heavy, more than a Vélib’! When you ride, it does not feel, but as soon as there is an obstacle, a slightly high sidewalk, steps of a staircase or even a simple steep slope, its weight is immediately a real burden. It’s a shame and unfortunately complicated to do otherwise.

On the other hand, a huge positive point is its autonomy, thanks to its 450 Wh battery, this allowed us to have a range well beyond 60 km with assistance, a record! In addition, this battery is completely removable (via a key), which allows it to be recharged either attached to the bike or removed from it. This is especially handy if you can’t ride your bike to the 6th floor of your building.

You will note that this bike can therefore be used with or without a battery, thanks to its speeds and if you remove the battery, it can be used for troubleshooting, but that is not the purpose of an electric bike.

Exceptional state aid of up to €400

Since August 15, in order to promote its use, the Government has increased the ecological bonus and the conversion bonus for the acquisition of a bicycle. Extending until at least December 31, 2022, it makes it possible to increase the aid ceilings already in place in order to allow households in rural areas to also benefit from aid, often reserved for inhabitants of metropolitan areas.

  • An opening of the Bonus Vélo to the whole territory, which means that it is no longer necessary to have the help of a local authority.
  • A revaluation of the Bicycle Bonus. If the latter could not exceed €200, it will now be capped at €300, or even €400 for households belonging to the first and second deciles, as well as for people with disabilities.
  • A greater choice of products, in particular more specific products such as cargo bikes or folding bikes. The latter will also be accompanied by a bonus of €1,000, in the event that this does not exceed 40% of the purchase value. A bike below €2,500 should therefore be eligible.

Combinable devices

The big cities are the first to encourage their citizens to opt for the electric bike. In Paris, three systems overlap:

Several other towns and cities offer aid for the purchase of a VAE:

In addition, many medium-sized towns and conurbation communities support the acquisition of an electric bicycle (Orléans, La Rochelle, Roanne, Blois, Épinal, Épernay, Nevers, Vannes, Arcachon, etc.).
