And the “best game ever” is …

Dark Souls has inherited the most coveted palm, while Resident Evil Village is reaping some laurels on its side.

The 39th edition of the prestigious Golden Joystick Awards, which rewards the video game nuggets of the past year, has just handed down its verdict. And the least we can say is that the list of laureates – in particular that of the title of “Ultimate Game of All Time”Did not get everyone to agree.

For this 2021 version, the organizing committee wanted to make the video game 50 years old man. The whole has therefore deviated slightly from its usual formula; in addition to the best games of the year, this edition included an honorary title of “best game ever”. This has been attributed to Dark Souls, the now legendary title from FromSoftware.

A choice not necessarily surprising given that the game has built an incredibly devoted fanbase thanks to its demanding gameplay, its rather high difficulty and its breathtaking level design which is still one of the absolute references today. Hidetaka Miyazaki, the studio boss, said he was deeply touched by this tribute to his iconic game. It is therefore a great consecration for the studio, whose very promising Elden Ring who also won the title of “Most anticipated game”.

But not all observers were so enthusiastic. And we understand them, because the list also includes other titles with perhaps superior pedigree, all of which could have claimed first place for various reasons. Dark Souls has thus been ahead of historical behemoths such as the Doom from 1993, Half-Life 2, Super Mario 64, Tetris, Minecraft, Portal, the first Halo, or this good old man Tetris.

Resident Evil: Village, best game of 2021
