BlizzCon 2022 canceled, sexual harassment case involved?

Blizzard has just announced that it does not want to organize BlizzCon 2022 as planned, while the studio is in the midst of a scandal for sexual harassment.

It has been two years since the global pandemic delayed or suppressed many physical events. Blizzard was no exception to the rule and had canceled its BlizzCon 2021 to focus on a 2022 edition, which should have taken place according to the rules of the art. It was without counting on its cancellation also, just announced by Blizzard.

In a press release published on Tuesday, the studio says it wants to take the time to think about its event, in order to reinvent it: ” we’d like to take the time to reimagine what a BlizzCon event from the future might look like. Regardless of how the event looks in the future, we also need to ensure that it is as safe, welcoming and inclusive as possible. “.

Also, the company says it wants to take the time to work more on the games to come. We can read : “ Right now, we believe that the energy required to host such an event is best used to support our teams and advance the development of our games and experiences. “.

No mention of the current case

This is reminiscent of the fact that Blizzard is currently suffering from a scandal affecting many of the company’s employees, who have been accused of sexual harassment, and of fostering a toxic work environment. If this case was in no way mentioned by the studio in its press release, one can easily imagine that the complaints filed by the employees, then by the investors, largely contributed to the decision.

Indeed, Blizzard seems to be struggling to recover from the scandal, which is taking on proportions that the company had not imagined. In addition, BlizzCon is one of the elements involved in the complaints for sexual harassment, since it seems that the event was the scene of the famous “Cosby Suite” affair. Alex Afrasiabi, former artistic director on World of warcraft, would then have sexually harassed several women.

Any news from Diablo 4? Overwatch 2?

However, the cancellation of BlizzCon 2022 does not mean that players will have no news of the games to come. Blizzard announces at the end of its press release that several announcements will be made in February. The studio did not specify which games would be in the spotlight, but we already have our little idea.

Indeed, it has been quite a while since we have heard from the Diablo 4 title, and we already know that it could arrive in 2022. At its side, we hope to have information about Overwatch 2, whose development seems to be at an end. We should then have a release date, if Blizzard doesn’t decide to give it to us first.
