did the creators know the end of novels?

A representative of George RR Martin assures that the creators of Game of Thrones have no idea how the saga ends on paper.

Game Of Thrones It’s finish. In May 2019, after eight seasons, the adventures of Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen and Tyrion Lannister came to an end on HBO and OCS. A conclusion that was not really to the taste of the fans of the first hour, for whom the last episodes sounded like a real affront to the work of George RR Martin.

While some still have it in their throats, like the wine swallowed by Joffrey Baratheon, we learn that George RR Martin was not exactly thrilled with the way in which the two creators DB Weiss and David Benioff strayed from his recommendations. .

In Tinderbox: HBO’s Ruthless Pursuit of New Frontiers, which traces the history of the American channel, Martin’s spokesperson explains that the latter would have been worried for a long time about the path followed by the writers.

“George loves Dan and Dave (Weiss and Benioff editor’s note), after season 5, he started to worry about the path they were following because George knows where the story is going. He started to say ‘you don’t follow my pattern’. The first 5 seasons stuck to George’s roadmap. Then they moved away from it ”.

He also explains that according to him, the two screenwriters do not know the end of the literary saga.

“George didn’t tell me who would get the throne, he won’t tell anyone. I believe his publisher and agent know this, but I don’t. And I’ve been representing George since 1992… So I have no idea where this is all going, but the bottom line is that the end of the book is a more interesting experience than the end of the series ”.

Statements which go against that of the author, but which could explain the tipping point of the last seasons.

Scriptwriting freedoms that have not been successful?

Among the differences observed between the novels and the series, it is mainly the journey of Daenerys Targaryen that is the problem. Indeed, the writers have chosen to pass a whole part of its history in silence, and in particular the appearance of visions when it crosses the Dothrak Sea.

If this may seem trivial enough on paper, we imagine that these scriptwriting issues could have explained the sad turnaround of the last episodes. This is what many fans of Game Of Thrones in season 8, to have precipitated what could thus have been developed over several seasons.

However, despite these statements by Paul Haas, George RR Martin has never had anything other than praise to address to the two creators, in public at least. It must be said that the contract that binds him to HBO is colossal, especially since the chain is developing many projects adapted from its universe.

A revival with House of the Dragon

Like Game Of Thrones, the new series is inspired by a book by George RR Martin. The writers of House of the dragon adapt Fire and blood for the small screen, a book that traces the entire history of the Targaryens without being considered a novel. Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan J. Condal therefore have a great deal of leeway, especially since the story on which he is inspired was this time ended by the author.

Still, it is often difficult for a sequel or a spin-off to replace the original work in the hearts of fans, especially when there are as many of them as those of Game Of Thrones. However, we can bet that the presence of George RR Martin behind the scenes is rather reassuring.

The appointment for Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon is set for next year. No date has yet been put forward, but we hope that HBO will soon tell us more.
