Final Fantasy XIV: in the face of server congestion, Square Enix suspends sales of the game

Final Fantasy XIV (PC, macOS, PlayStation) has enjoyed monumental success since the launch of Endwalker, to the point that publisher Square Enix seems totally overwhelmed by the influx of players who want to join the MMORPG. In desperation, Square Enix has therefore taken the hard decision to suspend sales of the game, hoping in the meantime to improve the capacity of its servers: “Due to the high number of connected players, especially at peak times, the waiting times are extremely long and the capacity of the servers is regularly exceeded, and that is why we have decided to temporarily suspend the sale and the ‘Shipment of the Starter Edition and the Complete Edition of Final Fantasy 14 “ declares a bit fatalistic Naoki Yoshida, director and producer of Final Fantasy XIV.

Sales are suspended sine die, as well as the advertising campaign around the game, and it will not be possible to register for a free trial either. On the other hand, those who already play FF XIV will be able to access the various extensions or switch to the collector’s edition. In view of the extreme slowness sometimes observed to log into the game, Square Enix also adds a small commercial gesture in the form of 14 days of free play (therefore deducted from the subscription). The publisher had already offered 7 days of free access recently, but the persistence of connection problems since the beginning of December has made this first “gift” a little derisory.

Square Enix plans to equip itself with new servers before reopening the registration taps, starting by strengthening access capacities in North America and Europe.
