Honor will launch its next folding smartphone in Europe

Honor confirmed earlier this month that its future folding smartphone will be marketed in Europe. A turning point for the brand, but what will the successor to the Magic V look like?

Honor is once again one of the brands to follow and the Chinese manufacturer has ambitions. At the beginning of the year, Honor presented its first folding smartphone called Magic V. A promising device that unfortunately did not cross European borders, preferring to bet on the Chinese market. Bad news for European users who have not been able to discover this competitor to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 4. Like the Samsung models, the Magic V is a folding smartphone in book format and resolutely premium.

Earlier this month, Honor took advantage of the presentation of the Honor 70, MagicBook 14 and Pad 8 at IFA 2022 in Berlin to discuss its strategy. For George Zhao, CEO of the brand, it is necessary to offer two high-end aircraft (flagship) per year. In addition toa smartphone in traditional formatHonor account offers an international folding model. Honor believes that we should no longer be satisfied with the borders of the Middle Kingdom and aim for other regions.

Interviewed by The Verge in Berlin, George Zhao explained: “We have decided that next year, in the first quarter, we will bring our new folding smartphone to international markets”, including Europe. The CEO did not mention the characteristics of this new device, he confirms that the Old Continent will see the successor to the Magic V land. France should be one of the countries concerned.

2023, a pivotal year for the folding smartphone?

It will probably not take don’t wait too long before discovering this new model. Indeed, Honor had formalized the Magic V in January 2022 and its successor could arrive a year later. It would allow the Chinese brand to position itself against Samsung devices… and its Chinese compatriots. Indeed, Oppo also plans to market new folding smartphones on the European market. We also know that OnePlus plans to enter this segment, without forgetting Xiaomi, Vivo and even Motorola. Google would also be working on a folding Pixel.

The year 2023 could therefore offer us an interesting battle, with Samsung still in the lead. The South Korean manufacturer leads the dance and believes that folding smartphones will be “the new normal” by 2025.

What should we expect from the successor to the Magic V?

Regarding the successor to the Magic V, expect a new top-of-the-range model. The current smartphone offers an internal 7.9-inch (2,272 x 1,984 pixel) OLED screen and an external 6.45-inch (2,560 x 1,080 pixel) display. Under the hood, it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip and three 50-megapixel cameras on the back. If Honor remains discreet about its future model, the brand indicates that it wants to make its devices folding “thinner, lighter and more affordable”.
