Without warning, Google unveiled this Thursday the future version of its flagship operating system, Android 13. For the moment, it is only a Developer Preview, a version dedicated to developers far from the final version. that we should see appear this summer on Pixels. Also, the installation itself is not intended to be accessible to just anyone.

For the moment, the new features of Android 13 are quite limited. We can note the customization of the color of the icons, a new way to add quick settings more easily, the possibility of launching an application in a language which is not that of the system, APIs for developers to adapt applications large screens (tablets and foldable smartphones), or even additional privacy options. Of course, this is bound to evolve over time, with about one update per month until at least July.

How to install Android 13 DP 1?

Warning ! Developer Preview builds of Android are designed for developers, not everyday use. Many bugs may be present and many functions inaccessible (Google Pay for example). In addition, this manipulation can make your phone permanently unusable in the event of a problem. We therefore advise you not to try this on your main smartphone, especially if you are not sure what you are doing. In addition, this manipulation will erase all data from your phone. Consider making a backup first.

Do you still want to continue? So follow the guide!

Install ADB on your computer

The first step is to install ADB tools on your computer. You will find them on the Google site dedicated to developers. Select the version that matches your operating system in the ” Command Line tools only“. On Windows, you will also need the Google USB drivers.

Once these tools are installed, copy the OTA file downloaded above to the same folder.

Reboot into recovery mode

Now we can get to the heart of the matter. Start by enabling developer options on your Pixel. Then restart the phone in mode recovery. To do this, turn off your phone, then turn it back on while holding the Power and Volume Down buttons until the Bootloader appears (a black page with inscriptions).

In this menu, you can navigate with the volume up and down buttons and validate with the Power button.

Install Android 13 DP via ADB

Connect your smartphone to your computer and launch a command prompt on it. In this terminal, navigate to the folder containing the ADB tools and type the command adb sideload followed by the name of the OTA file. On Linux and macOS, add ./ in front of this command, which gives ./adb sideload.

For a Pixel 6 Pro under Windows, you will therefore have to type adb sideload raven-ota-tpp1.220114.016-e226a305.zip and validate.

Android 13 will then install and your phone will return to the screen Recovery. Select Reboot Now to reboot, and voila!
