Huawei Freebuds Pro 2 review, endurance darkens a bright board

Available since July 27, 2022, we spent the whole month with Huawei’s new headphones. Here is our review of the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2.

The market is saturated, all brands of electronics or telephony have entered the market of wireless headphones. And to stand out from the crowd, we must admit that it is not easy. Also, Huawei associated with a sound name, Devialetto launch since the beginning of the summer the FreeBuds Pro 2.

And for once, the Chinese manufacturer did not go there with the back of the spoon. It’s not the first time that Huawei partners with the French brand. We had already had the home speaker, the Sound X, and the portable speaker, the SoundJoy. If the first “pro” headphones from Huawei had not yet benefited from the partnership with Devialet, the Freebuds Pro 2 intend to offer users the best of both worlds.

With a sound Devialetactive noise reduction, a slightly differentiating design, we just spent a month with it, here is our opinion on the Huawei Freebuds Pro 2.

Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 Overview and Features

If we find a white color of the most classic, despite the name of the color: Ceramic White, we appreciate Huawei’s choice to offer new colors that are totally different. Thus, the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 are also available in Silver Frost and Silver Blue. It is moreover this last version that we had in test and force is to recognize that this color is more than successful. While the box has a matte finish, the headphones are glossy with a slight bluish tint that looks great.

With a weight of only 5.9g, the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 are not necessarily the smallest but they are clearly light. They hold very well in the ear and do not weigh in the ear during the day. With such a design, we were a little afraid precisely for the comfort over long sessions and fortunately, we had nothing to complain about, to the delight of our ears.

The case is all round and of a classic size. On the other hand, it must be admitted that the design of the FreeBuds Pro 2 is rather atypical with rounded headphones while the stem is in a very square shape. The small black parts hide the microphones and the presence sensor. Of course, several sizes of bits are delivered in the box, which should allow the user to find what he is looking for with the different sizes of bits. In any case, as we said above, they hold very well in the ear and this, without discomfort.

We guessed it, the controls will be at the level of the stem and as much to keep it simple, Huawei has copied the system inaugurated with Apple’s AirPods Pro. It will therefore suffice to pinch the rod to launch the commands. Unlike the AirPods Pro, the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 offer volume control. All you have to do is hold the stem with two fingers and move up or down to manage the volume. Practice. The controls respond to the finger and the eye (rather by ear for once), the haptic feedback is too weak in our opinion but nothing blocking. These are the same controls on both headphones.

If we obviously find a plastic finish, the latter is of good quality and we did not have much to complain about. The case is relatively small and will slip easily into any pocket. And finally autonomy and we prefer to warn, this is where the shoe pinches since according to our 01Lab measurements, with active noise reduction, the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 only last 3h30. In truth, it’s enough but we are still far from the 7 hours of the recent Google Pixel Buds Pro for example. With the box, it’s up to 6 p.m. with active noise cancellation and up to 30 p.m. without.

Noise Reduction and Sound

If the design has evolved slightly compared to the first FreeBuds Pro of the name, it is especially on active noise reduction that Huawei has made enormous efforts. Moreover, it was the first to have launched a dynamic and intelligent type noise cancellation. Suddenly, this year, Huawei has refined its technologies. Also, with three microphones on each of the headphones, and according to the Chinese manufacturer, it is active noise cancellation which is around 15% more effective than its predecessor.

As a result, the Chinese manufacturer offers 3 levels of noise cancellation: Ultra, General and Cozy. This will allow the user to better choose his noise reduction according to the scenarios. In fact, we prefer to leave in Ultra in order to have the best possible insulation (even if we have a dynamic and automatic mode). But that’s not all, since Huawei has optimized its algos against aircraft noise and wind. In the end, and this is perhaps the most important, we stay in our bubble in use.

Transparency mode is pretty good but not up to par with the AirPods. If we hear our environment naturally, it is our voice that echoes, which we had not seen with the AirPods Pro or the Google Pixel Buds Pro. Too bad, especially since the voice is perfectly transcribed, at least, according to our interlocutors. We will even note a Voice mode in the AI Life application which allows you to focus on the voice and reduces ambient noise.

And finally for the sound, what is this partnership with Devialet worth? Well we prefer to say it right away, it’s all good. The audio quality of the headphones is impressive. The bass is present and yet the sound is not muffled and we find this aerial side. The sound is somewhat cold for some but Huawei offers equalizers with default settings and/or customization.

As usual, we resumed our tests on compositions by Ryuichi Sakamoto or RAP by Rich Bryan without forgetting the Pop classics of the moment including the new albums by Drake and especially Beyoncé. The restitution of the instruments is precise and the voices are clearly distinguishable. The Huawei AI Life application still allows you to adjust the equalizers to customize the sound rendering if the default one does not suit the user.
