IBM and Samsung unveil semiconductor technology that could be a game-changer in energy terms

The race for computing power will not be won only in the area of ​​fine engraving. IBM and Samsung have just unveiled a new semiconductor technology capable of changing the situation in terms of energy consumption, and therefore playing a decisive role in the autonomy of future portable devices. This potentially disruptive technology is the Vertical Transport Field Effect Transistors (VTFET), or a new processor architecture with transistors placed vertically on the die.

The vertical arrangement of the transistors is not quite a first, but the VTFET benefits from this architectural verticality across the chip. The two partners promise energy consumption gains of around 85 (!) At computational power comparable to a conventional chip, which in theory could lead to smartphones with a good week of battery life! Samsung also mentions cryptocurrency mining (today extremely energy-intensive to the point that some countries want to ban it on their soil) in the list of sectors more particularly “targeted” by the VTFET.

These super-economical chips are still at the prototype stage for the moment. For mass production, it will therefore be necessary to wait a few more years.
