Insta360 is very active at the moment and after a webcam that was out of the ordinary, here is our test of the new Insta360 X3.
Insta360 continues to be super active in the market for 360 cameras and action cameras in general. Before the summer, we had the right to the new One RS with its classic 360 module but also a version co-developed with Leica which brought 1-inch sensors, which marked a significant gap in terms of quality compared to the previous 360 camera from the Chinese manufacturer (the One X2).
But it was without counting on Insta360 who understood that the Leica version, because of its size and its design, was not cut like an action camera and could in no way claim to be the successor of the One X2. Well that’s good because Insta360 has just formalized its new 360 camera, theInsta360 X3 and yes, it is the successor of the One X2. Note the disappearance of the naming “One”.
The technical characteristics of the Insta360 X3
We are not necessarily going to go into all the technical details of the new Insta360 360 camera. Also, we will focus on the essentials. The new Insta360 X3 comes with two new 1/2 inch sensors, which allows the X3 to record 360 videos with 5.7K resolution and HDR, as well as 360 photos of up to 72 Megapixels.
It was one of the flagship options of the GoPro Max, the new Insta360 X3 now offers a Single-Lens mode that can record videos up to 4K. The Insta360 X3 also offers a new FollowMe mode which allows you to film yourself in a selfie from a distance from the pole without the latter appearing.
There are Timelapses up to 8K, the famous FlowState stabilization and horizon maintenance, whatever the video mode and therefore in 360 too. The Insta360 X3 remains an action camera and is waterproof up to 10m. And finally, the X3 welcomes a brand new 2.29-inch rectangle screen in tempered glass. Note also the new 1800mAh battery.
Available today, count 539.99 euros.
Like the One X2, the new Insta360 X3 has an all-rectangular design with a finish that allows it to be completely waterproof up to 10m and shock resistant. Of course, it will always be necessary to pay attention to the objectives. E for the latter, we immediately notice that they are slightly larger since the sensors are larger this year.
Note that the Insta360 X3 always comes with a neoprene case that can protect the device in a bag. We can only strongly advise you to invest in the “cap” with rubber lenses and as an option. And speaking of packaging, there is a small cloth and a USB-C cable for charging.
Compared to the One X2, Insta360 has unfortunately opted for a different battery. It’s a shame not to be in continuity as was the case with the One RS. We always find this system where the battery also plays the role of battery hatch to ensure the tightness of the device.
But what surprises the most is this new rectangular screen of 2.29 inches, much larger than the circular screen of its predecessor. At the bottom of this screen is an LED to indicate the different possible actions. Unsurprisingly, the new screen provides unprecedented ease of use, whether for framing or for accessing the various settings.
Videos and photos
One of the big weak points of the One X2 was its low-light performance. Indeed, when the light conditions were ideal, the One X2 did well and we didn’t have much to complain about. But when the lighting conditions were more difficult, the digital noise appeared too quickly. It was all the more obvious when we had the One RS 1-Inch 360 Leica Edition where the latter worked miracles in low light.
The difference was obvious, thanks to the difference in sensor but also in generation. Also, with this new Insta360 X3, the manufacturer has tried to offer the right balance between visual quality and being able to take it everywhere. We thus end up with 1/2 inch sensors, much more effective in low light conditions. If the One RS 1-Inch 360 Leica Edition always offers the best quality and it is undeniable, it is not an action camera and we will not be able to take it in the water for example. This is where the X3 differs in its uses.
As always, in a 360 camera, the most important thing is not so much its hardware part. It is the software part that remains the most important and that is what makes the success of Insta360 products. Indeed, if the X3 provides capture with its new sensors, it is above all its application (iOS, Android, PC and Mac) which will ensure the proper use of 360 files. And for those who do not know it yet, one of the big advantages of 360 cameras is that you don’t need to frame during capture. Also, it is via the application that we will frame in “post-production”. The advantage is that for the same given instant, we can offer a different framing several times, which is super practical for a vlogger for example. Thanks to 360° capture, a 4:5 Instagram post can become a 9:16 TikTok video in one click without affecting the quality.
We pass you the color effects or other playful filters that everyone can discover to focus on the essential functions. With a 360 camera, Insta360 has all the latitude it needs to best stabilize its image. Also, the in-house stabilization, FlowState, is exceptionally effective. We do not forget either the follow-up of the subject and more particularly the new FollowMe function which will make it possible to follow the main subject in real time.
