Instagram announces abandoning its copy of TikTok following criticism

Instagram is going to roll back several changes put in place in recent weeks, to the point that the social network looked a lot like TikTok, but in a generally failed version. There was a lot of criticism about it and so the platform agreed to roll back.

Several people with substantial followings have criticized the recent picks, including Kylie Jenner (361 million subscribers) and Kim Kardashian (326 million subscribers). There was even a “Let Instagram be Instagram again” petition. This somewhat pushed the platform to react, while it turned a deaf ear when “non-influencer” users criticized its choices.

Adam Mosseri, the boss of Instagram, had initially announced that a particular emphasis would be placed on the video, stressing in passing that the photos were no longer going to be the priority. Today, the leader tells Platformer that changes will take place:

I’m glad we took a risk. If we don’t fail once in a while, we don’t think big or bold enough. But we definitely need to take a big step back and regroup.

The exact details of what will change on Instagram are somewhat hazy. Adam Mosseri said the company will temporarily reduce the number of recommended posts and accounts you see in your main feed. Going forward, however, the executive says Instagram will likely increase that number again once it improves the ranking and recommendation algorithms.

Also, the full-screen display of photos and videos will soon stop. But again, the details are slight (is it permanently or temporarily?). It will therefore be necessary to wait before really seeing if the experience will be as before.
