iOS 15.1 is available, here are its new features

iOS 15 is getting its very first major update since its launch. This notably marks the arrival of ProRes on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

While Apple has just delivered the final version of macOS Monterey, the company takes the opportunity to offer its iPhone a major update: iOS 15.1. This is the very first major update to the latest version of the operating system since its launch a month ago, and it brings many new features that have been expected since iOS 15 was unveiled during the last WWDC in June and iPhone 13 in September.

The latest iPhone models thus benefit from a major novelty with iOS 15.1, the ProRes. This new codec is to video what the ProRaw, launched last year with the iPhone 12, is to photos. Thus, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max under iOS 15.1 will now be able to shoot videos in ProRes and enjoy an uncompressed format, ideal for professional productions and greater flexibility in editing.

If you are the lucky owner of an iPhone 13 Pro or an iPhone 13 Pro Max, you will need to manually activate this option in Settings> Camera> Formats, then check the ProRes option. Note that you will need a device offering at least 256 GB of storage to be able to shoot ProRes in 4K, 128 GB models being limited to 1080p in this mode.

As for older iPhone users, they will also enjoy some crisp new things with iOS 15.1. We note in particular the arrival of SharePlay, which is probably one of the novelties on which Apple insisted the most during its presentation of iOS 15, last June.

Concretely, SharePlay allows you to share its content with your contacts in real time. This makes it possible to follow a movie, series or music at the same time as your loved ones, all during a FaceTime conversation. A feature that would undoubtedly have been used a lot during the periods of confinement that we have all known during the last year …

iOS 15.1 also brings new features on the home automation side with additional settings in the native Home application, and the addition of Lossless and Dolby Atmos on Apple Music with HomePods and HomePod Mini. The update is available on all Apple devices capable of supporting iOS 15, i.e. all models from iPhone 6S.
