macOS Monterey is available, here are all its new features

The new version of macOS is available! Is your Mac compatible? How to install it? And above all, what are its novelties?

That’s it. After several months of beta since the presentation of macOS Monterey during WWDC in June, Apple has just released the final version of the new Mac operating system.

To install it, go to your Mac’s System Preferences. Then head into “Software update”, then wait for your page to update. When macOS Monterey is deployed on your machine, you just need to follow the instructions from this page. Your computer will restart and you will then have access to all the new features of Apple’s new operating system for Mac.

Also, make sure that your Mac is indeed compatible with this new version of Apple’s operating system before you start this process. To check your model, click on the apple at the top left, then “About this Mac”. The OS is available on the following machines:

  • MacBook (12 inches): from early 2016
  • MacBook Air: from early 2015
  • MacBook Pro: from early 2015
  • iMac: from the end of 2015
  • Mac mini: from late 2014
  • Mac Pro: from late 2013
  • iMac Pro

Safari

One of the major new features of macOS Monterey is the new version of Safari it brings. The browser offers a completely revised address bar. The tabs now adopt the color of the site displayed. On the Geek’s Journal, for example, the tab should be in its characteristic color so that you can easily find your page. This new presentation, called “Compact”, can nevertheless be deactivated with the “Separate” display in order to bring back the tabs under the address bar.

Also, there are Tab Groups, which, as their name suggests, allow you to group several tabs together so as not to lose them. It looks more or less like a kind of folder regrouping the tabs that you will have slipped there.

Concentration

As on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, the Mac offers the new concentration modes. This is an extension of the Do Not Disturb mode allowing you to create tailor-made profiles and filter your notifications according to your activity: work, rest, time for yourself …

This status is also synchronized with your other Apple devices, just as it is displayed to your contacts on your iMessage conversations.

FaceTime

Apple’s video conferencing system evolves with macOS Monterey. Its great novelty is that it escapes the shackles of the Mac and is exported to other media! Thus, it will be possible to invite users on Windows or Android to join a FaceTime conversation via a link accessible from a browser.

We also find the other new features landed on FaceTime with iOS / iPadOS 15, such as the voice isolation mode, which will effectively eliminate parasitic sounds and allow you to better hear your interlocutor, or “Broad spectrum”, which allows exactly the ‘reverse. The option to blur your background is also available with macOS Monterey, but only for Mac users with SoC M1, M1 Pro, or M1 Max.

AirPlay

Do you often use your Mac as an external display? That’s good, because with macOS Monterey, your computer takes a new step. If it was already possible to stream your Mac’s screen to an external display via AirPlay, the computer screen itself becomes a receiver for other devices. Concretely, you will be able to display the content broadcast on your iPhone or your iPad directly on the screen of your Mac.

However, this option will not be available with all Macs. It will require a minimum of a 2018 MacBook Pro or Air, a 2019 iMac, a 2020 Mac mini, a 2019 Mac Pro, or an iMac Pro.

Text in picture

Just like on iPhone and iPad, Mac adopts Text in Picture function. Concretely, you can simply copy / paste text from an image. By passing your cursor over a text contained in an image, you will be able to select it as if it were a simple block of text.

Universal Control

During the presentation of macOS Monterey during WWDC 2021, one feature particularly impressed us: Universal Control. The idea is to be able to move your mouse between its different devices. For example, if an iPad sits to the right of your MacBook, you just need to drag the pointer to the right for it to appear on the tablet.

The most impressive is that this function can work on multiple devices. During the conference, Apple notably placed an iPad, a MacBook and the latest iMac 24 ″ side by side, before moving the cursor between these three devices, and even dragging / files from the iPad to the iMac , through the MacBook!

Issue: Universal Control will not be available right away when macOS Monterey is launched. We will have to wait a few more weeks before being able to walk his cursor between Mac and iPad.

In addition to these new features, there are also some welcome additions, such as the arrival of the Quick Note function, allowing you to easily create a note by sliding the cursor to the lower right corner of the screen, some new features on the Split View side, new privacy settings in Mail, or new features in Messages, Maps and on the battery management side.
