Microsoft introduces new Surface at a low price for students

Microsoft recently introduced Windows 11 SE and a new laptop PC to compete with Chromebooks; will it be released in France one day?

Chromebooks have colonized a significant part of the PC ecosystem for years. These small devices, without a dedicated graphics card and running on Chrome OS therefore seem to be jealous of Microsoft’s side, which will try to respond with the upcoming release of Windows 11 SE and the Surface Laptop SE.

This is a lighter, more streamlined version of its latest operating system. This is optimized to run on relatively low-power equipment, whether recent or older. In principle, it will be possible to run any Windows application there; on the other hand, we must expect that Microsoft has optimized its OS for its own software suite, starting with the Office office suite and its Edge browser.

The latter will now accept Chrome extensions by default. According to The Verge, it is a response to an already established situation. Schools are now used to using the Google ecosystem and the extensions that go with it, and if Microsoft wants to invest in this market, it must indeed be pragmatic. In addition, Windows 11 SE will be cut off from the Widgets of the original; Microsoft has indeed judged that they could distract students during lessons. This version will also save all documents directly to One Drive; this will make life easier for teachers while allowing students to work easily from home.

The objective of the troops of Redmond is quite obvious: they wish to invest the market of the schools, on which the Chromebooks of Google reign supreme today. And for good reason: with their featherweight, their reassuring autonomy and their often very reasonable prices, they are the ideal solution for an establishment that would like to build up a computer park without breaking the bank.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop SE, the perfect companion

It is therefore a very interesting market for the tech giants, for a lot of different and varied reasons. But to invest, it is still necessary to have a flagship capable of seducing school directors. Fortunately for Microsoft, Windows 11 SE doesn’t come alone; it is accompanied by the Surface Laptop SE, a variation of its successful laptop.

This is a particularly economical model, since it will be marketed at a price of $ 249 (around € 215); perfect for a school that would like to equip several classes at once. But at this price, obviously, you shouldn’t expect to do anything other than basic office automation. It ships an Intel Celeron N4020 / N4120 with very modest capacities, 4 to 8 GB of RAM, and 64 to 128 GB of eMMC storage in an all-plastic shell. According to Microsoft, the battery should last around 16 hours.

Everything will be used to power a very rudimentary 11.6-inch screen, with a resolution of 1366 x 768. On the edge, there is a connection again quite sober. This “Windowsbook” has a USB-A port, a USB-C port and a 3.5mm jack. It also has a 720p webcam which should provide the bare essentials during videoconferences. And if any of these components fail, don’t panic; As part of its commitment to repairability, Microsoft will produce spare parts that will allow schools to repair their equipment without having to replace everything, or wait several weeks.

Finally, note that the Windows 11 SE ecosystem will not stop with this new Surface product. Many other manufacturers have already announced that they will produce devices for this line, including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo. It remains to be hoped that he will one day land in France, which is far from being a guarantee for the moment; At the moment, we do not have any availability date in any case.
