Squid Game will be entitled to a season 2. The boss of Netflix confirmed it in the columns of the Variety site. Hwang Dong-Hyuk, the creator of the series, had already announced that he was working on his baby’s sequel a few weeks ago.
Squid Game was the surprise phenomenon of 2021. No one would have bet a euro on this South Korean series released in September on Netflix, and yet it was a real cultural tidal wave. The CEO of the streaming platform has officially announced that she would have the right to a season 2.
It is in the columns of Variety that Ted Sarandos announced the thing. More than a season 2, he declared in half words that Squid Game was set to stay in the series landscape for a long time:
” [Est-ce qu’il y aura une saison 2 ?] Absoutely ! The Squid Game universe has only just begun. »
Squid Game will have the right to its season 2
This advert is not really a surprise. The open ending of the last episode gave way to more stories in this universe. Hwang Dong-Hyuk, the creator of the series, even confirmed a few weeks ago that he was already working on this sequel. The arrival of a season 2 is an unusual thing for a Korean series, but in the face of such success, stopping after a single and unique season was simply unthinkable. At the moment, we don’t yet have a release window for this new burst of episodes. Production has not yet started, so we will have to count on 2023 at the earliest.

Squid Game has been a mainstay at Netflix for the second half of 2021. During its quarterly review, the platform reported that that’s 142 million subscribers who watched him. A stratospheric figure, especially for a new series, not based on a known license.
It remains to be seen what season 2 will have in store for us. It will be difficult to create the surprise again, or to do the same thing again. Hwang Dong-Hyuk will therefore have to be inventive to give new impetus to his universe and his character.
