Cédric O, the Secretary of State for Digital, assured on Franceinfo that TousAntiCovid was “A priori the most downloaded French application in history” with its 50 million downloads. But this is not true and the Secretary of State admitted to being wrong.
A correction on the popularity of TousAntiCovid
For example, the Deezer music streaming app has more than 50 million downloads on Android alone. The numbers on iOS aren’t known because Apple doesn’t share them publicly, while Google and its Play Store do. There is also the VLC media player which has over 100 million downloads on Android alone. In both cases, these are French applications.
Cédric O informed BFMTV that he had made a mistake with his statement. It was actually based on the current rankings of the most downloaded applications, both on the App Store and on the Play Store. And indeed, TousAntiCovid was regularly in the first place. This is still the case today, moreover. But that doesn’t mean downloads are a record high.
The Secretary of State added that the application warns 50,000 people every day to let them know that they are in contact. It’s not much when you know that there are significantly more cases every day. Just yesterday, there were 258,787 new cases. The low number of people notified can be explained by the fact that it is possible to use TousAntiCovid without necessarily activating tracing.
