Le défi de l'infertilité

Reconstructable materials derived from the uterus to repair infertility?

Researchers from the Medical University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have highlighted RUMs (from English “reconstructable uterus-derived materials”). As their name suggests, they are reconstructable materials derived from the uterus. This innovation allowed them to restore the badly damaged uterus of female rats infertile.

The uterus is a hollow organ made up of several layers of tissue: the endometrium, the myometrium and the perimetrium. These biological extracts favored the almost complete resorption of severe uterine injuries. At the end of the treatment, the uterus of these rats was able to support a normal pregnancy, ensure fetal development and allow a live birth.

This study showed the huge therapeutic potential What do RUMs represent in regenerative medicine. They will significantly reduce infertility caused by uterine factors. The results of these experiments have been published on the website Advanced Materials.

Current treatments are not very effective in repairing the uterus

Today, uterine factors are the leading causes of infertility in women. Among them, intrauterine adhesion remains the most common. Several clinical strategies are already being adopted to help women give birth.

They consist of surgical procedures such as resection of adhesions, or placement of intrauterine devices, or even hormonal treatments. However, these measures cannot cure a diseased uterus.

RUMs are made from stem cells from the chorion

The Chinese researchers took stem cells from chorionic villi to manufacture the RUMs. They then seeded them in a extracellular matrix derived from the uterus. About 15 g of RUMs can be produced from one pig uterus and can treat up to 380 rats.

These RUMs can be cuboidal, triangular, prismatic or cubic in shape. They are used in a liquid or solid state, depending on the need. The scientists will then use either gels or patches.

RUMs prevent intrauterine adhesions

RUM injectable gel acted as a natural barrier to prevent intrauterine adhesions. He favored angiogenesis, endometrial regeneration and replenishment of muscle collagen.

On the other hand, the RUM patch is glued to the uterine wall to accelerate its healing. During this process, it secreted cytokines and other signaling molecules that promoted uterine healing.
