Shaun the sheep will join the Artemis 1 mission

Shaunthe famous sheep created by the Aardman studio (Wallace and Groomit) will join the mission Artemis 1 which must prepare the return of astronauts to the Moon. A Shaun plush will therefore board the Orion capsule on the day scheduled for the launch of Artemis 1, which is probably August 23rd.

Shaun the Sheep

David Parker, the director of the ESA, kindly joked about the choice of this rather special mascot:“This is an exciting time for Shaun and for us at ESA. We are very happy that he was selected for the mission and we understand that while this may be a small step for a human, it is a giant leap for the lamb. » On a more technical level, Shaun could serve as a zero-G indicator.

It should be noted that the introduction of toys and mascots in space missions is almost a tradition: Yuri Gagarinthe first man sent into space, had taken a small doll with him during his historic mission.

The Artemis 1 mission should start on August 23: the Orion capsule (with the “commander-dummy” Moonikin Campos on board) will be sent into orbit around the Moon for a period of 39 to 42 days.
