The best headphones came out two years ago and with a new design, Sony is launching the WH-1000XM5 which is to take up the torch.
Casually, it has already been two years since the WH-1000XM4 was released and it is clear that since then, no competitor has managed to do better than the headphones of sony. Also, the only one able to do better is none other than Sony itself. sony is therefore taking advantage of this spring 2022 to announce its brand new premium headphones with active noise reduction, the Sony WH-1000XM5 or Mark 5 for friends. To mark the occasion and after iterations where the design had changed little to focus on pure performance, the Sony WH-1000XM5 arrives with a brand new design, a sign of change.
A new design
There had been very few differences between the WH-1000XM3 and the WH-1000XM4. And even with the M2 and the first of the name. In any case, as the WH-1000XM3 was already performing well, we can decently assume that it was able to vampirize the sales of the WH-1000XM4 somewhat. Also, the design change (and the new price positioning) of the WH-1000XM5 marks a real change in the range.
The design has been refined in order to be thinner and more homogeneous, which gives a sober and elegant design, even minimalist according to some. The finish has been revised upwards with a so-called felted texture. The pads offer a softer leather for more comfort and finally, the sliding headband has also been revised to be quieter. If some had noticed some creaks because of the plastic on the WH-1000XM4 and its folding system, we no longer find these small hiccups on the WH-1000XM5.
But that’s not all, since Sony is offering a whole new packaging made from recycled paper, without any plastic. The carrying case has also been revised to be now in fabric and with a design that allows it to be easily flattened when empty. As a result, the most discerning will have noticed that the WH-1000XM5 no longer folds like its predecessor. On the other hand, it is flatter, which makes it easier to store.
The best noise reduction on the market?
Well, unsurprisingly, to date, Sony actually offers one of the best if not the best active noise reduction in consumer headphones. Also, with the WH-1000XM5 and on paper, Sony will try to offer even better. We obviously find everything that already characterized the WH-1000XM4 such as the QN1 processor or the use of artificial intelligence to adapt to uses and the environment in real time. On the WH-1000XM5, we are now entitled to 8 microphones and a structure to protect against wind noise, but that’s not all since Sony has also worked on the software part in order to offer better automatic optimization of the reduction. noise.
And to top it off, Sony has taken the liberty of adding a new V1 processor (from the brand’s recent headphones) which is also dedicated to noise reduction and which will work in concert with the QN1 processor for active reduction. both efficient and qualitative.
This year, the WH-1000XM5 offers new 30mm diaphragms, which are lighter but also more resistant at high frequencies. According to Sony, there are also materials based on gold for the printed circuits, which allows better control of the sound and this, without distortion.
2022 obliges, the WH-1000XM5 is HiRes Audio certified via the LDAC codec. Of course, it is 360 Audio compatible. And as usual, we find the DSEE Extreme which allows you to upscale compressed sources. This is done through AI-based technology to reproduce the erased frequencies.
Sony has not forgotten telephone conversations either and relies on four beam microphones (compared to two on the WH-1000XM4) and Precise Voice Pickup technology to precisely isolate the voice. It should also be noted that the structure of the microphones is now protected from the wind.
Daily functions have not been forgotten. As a result, we still find support for personal assistants such as Google Assistant, Alexa or Siri, but also the Speak to Chat function which allows the headset to automatically recognize the user’s voice and therefore automatically decrease the audio source. Practice.
There is also the Adaptive Sound Control technology which adjusts the noise reduction depending on where the user is. And finally, the WH-1000XM5 incorporates a new port detection sensor (invisible on the way), much more efficient and faster to automatically pause the music. Of course, everything remains configurable in the Sony Headphones application (iOS and Android).
Autonomy is similar to its predecessors. As a result, the Sony WH-1000XM5 offers a total autonomy of 30 hours with active noise reduction and 40 hours without. It also offers fast charging which allows you to have 3 hours of listening time for 3 minutes of charging. The WH-1000XM5 weighs 235g on the scale, making it lightweight for everyday use.
Price and availability
Available from the end of May 2022, the Sony WH-1000XM5 will be at the official price of 420 euros.
