Will Ubisoft be the next video game publisher to be bought out? The question may arise in view of what has happened in recent weeks with the takeovers of Activision by Microsoft, Zynga by Take-Two and Bungie by Sony. It turns out that the French publisher does not completely close the door.
Will a takeover of Ubisoft see the light of day?
In the phone call with analysts following the publication of the group’s financial results, Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, said he wanted some independence. But at the same time, any purchase proposal will be considered and not thrown in the trash.
We have always taken decisions in the interest of our stakeholders, namely our employees, our players and our shareholders. Ubisoft can remain independent: we have the talent, the financial scale and a large portfolio of original licenses. That said, if there was an offer to buy us, the board would of course consider it in the interest of all stakeholders.
Frédérick Duguet, Ubisoft’s chief financial officer, returned to the subject later during the call. “We won’t speculate on why people haven’t made an offer”to which Yves Guillemot added “Or if an offer has been made”.
To date, Ubisoft’s market capitalization is 5.34 billion euros. The stock fell 40.14% in the space of a year. A possible purchase proposal could be around 8 billion euros, knowing that you have to put a premium to make a company want to be bought out.
