Steam slams record numbers for 2021: number of active players and hours of play up sharply

Steam continues its insolent progression. The queen platform of PC Gaming has completed a particularly brilliant year 2021 (thanks to containment) and aligned record figures. The review of the year published by Valve thus enumerates a long list of satisfactions: the number of hours of play is growing very strongly (38 billion hours on Steam in 2021), as is spending per player (+27 %), the number of active players per day (69 million against 62 million in 2020) or even the number of active players each month (132 million players). As for the peak of simultaneous players, it is 27.4 million, and this is a record… for 2021 (29.6 million simultaneous players were recorded in February).

More surprisingly, we learn that 48 million Steam players (more than a third of players therefore)… use a controller during their sessions! Well then, where did the keyboard-mouse couple go? “master race” ? VR games are also progressing on the platform (+11%) and the Oculus Quest 2 (sorry Meta Quest 2) is the headset preferred by more than a third of SteamVR players. If we count the first Oculus Quest of the name, more than 40% of PCVR players now use a VR headset from Meta.
