If you had a little room left to accommodate an RPG featuring Mario, the director of super mario rpg recently expressed the wish to develop a direct sequel. A project that could be the last of his career.
Prior to leading the development of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Chihiro Fujioka has been a composer for a number of titles, starting with a Earthbound not being the one one would be tempted to think of. This game was indeed released in 1983 on computers, six years before the birth of Nintendo’s eponymous saga.
After being unloved writing Final Fantasy Mystic Questso our man led the project super mario rpg. The rest of his CV includes mentions to all the episodes of the saga Mario & Luigifrom the now defunct AlphaDream studio.
Super Mario RPG 2 would be its director’s last game
On February 14, Ben Hanson of YouTube channel MinnMax posted a video interview with Chihiro Fujioka. The latter was notably asked about his enthusiasm for working on a Mario RPG again.
“Yes, I would absolutely love to make one…yes, in my career I’ve been involved in a lot of games and I would really like my last to be another Mario RPG game, if possible…”
Before specifying that his wish would be that the game approaches the formula initiated on Super Famicom / Nintendo.
“I would like to go back and create a Mario RPG (different from Mario & Luigi) where you only control Mario…”
The recent Nintendo Direct having confirmed an appetite for the medium for the delivery of old recipes, we can very well envisage a future where a Super Mario RPG 2 would see the light of day with a graphic representation close to the first part. The latter, never marketed in Europe on its original medium, is now accessible there via the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It can also be acquired on the Virtual Console of the Wii U against 7.99 euros. And in either case, the texts are displayed in English.
