Tesla recalls nearly 500,000 Model 3 and Model S for repairs

Tesla has announced a massive recall of its vehicles: half a million cars need overhaul for issues involving the trunk (for Model 3) and trunk at the front (for Model S).

According to documents submitted to the US administration in charge of road safety, Tesla will recall a total of 475,000 vehicles in the United States. The majority concerns Model 3 (356,000) produced between 2017 and 2020, the rest of the Model S (119,000 copies).

The equivalent of the production of the year 2020 recalled

It is relatively common for an automaker to recall cars with defects after they have been marketed, and this has happened on several occasions for Tesla. Nevertheless, the scale of the operation is of concern since the company produced roughly the same volume of cars last year.

The issue Tesla reported on the Model 3s concerns the trunk at the back: a cable that controls the camera could fail due to a lack of protection. As for the Model S, it is potentially more serious: the trunk lid in the front is likely to open while driving, which would block the view of the driver.

Affected vehicles can be repaired at a Tesla Service Center. The repairs are of course supported by the manufacturer. The recall is not limited to the United States: in China, Model 3 and Model S owners are also affected. For the moment, the manufacturer has not said anything for Europe.
