It has been several weeks since POCO, a recent mobile phone brand, announced the upcoming release of its brand new smartphone, the POCO M5.
Positioning itself in the mid-range niche, the device is no less efficient, according to its technical sheet. If the device has been launched since September 5, 2022, what should we expect concretely?
The design of the POCO M5
Coming to expand the M range of POCO smartphones, the M5 takes up the great aesthetic classics of its family. Indeed, with the POCO M5, we are dealing with a relatively small smartphone, weighing 201 grams, for a height of 163.99 mm, a width of 76.09 mm and a thickness of 8.9 mm.
It therefore remains average, offering a pleasant grip, even if it is not the thinnest smartphone of its generation. When you know the models in this range, you are not surprised by its plastic shell. Let’s not forget that we are on a mid-range model, marketed at less than 200 €.
To bring a little fun into all this, the Chinese manufacturer offers the device in 3 different colors: black, cyan and yellow. Note that the device is designed with a fingerprint sensor on the back for locking and unlocking.
Zoom screen and camera
The manufacturer of the POCO M5 has equipped its brand new smartphone with a 6.58-inch screen, with a definition of 2408 x 1080 pixels, a contrast of 1500:1 and a maximum brightness of 500 cd/m². As for the panel, we are on an LDC model, taking advantage of a display frequency and a DPI estimated at 401 dpi.
To protect all this, the screen is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass. On the screen was embedded a 3 megapixel front photo sensor without flash.
At the rear, the device has up to 3 photo sensors, including a depth sensor and a 2 megapixel macro lens each and a 50 megapixel wide-angle lens. If the 3 rear sensors all have an LED flash, the lens aperture rate is estimated at f/2.4 against f/1.8 for the front photo sensor.
All of this allows for encouraging results, but we are very far from Samsung or Apple after a few shots…
What about processor and storage?
To operate its latest M5, we already knew that POCO has chosen to equip it with a Mediatek Helio G99 processor, operating at a frequency of 2.2 GHz while for its CPU, the manufacturer has opted for a Mali-G57 MC2 Octo-Core. The RAM memory, which has an initial capacity of 4 GB, is expandable up to 6 GB.
For storage, the device has an internal memory of 128 GB and can accommodate a microSD storage of 64 GB, but expandable up to 1 TB. Clearly, I have plenty here to store all types of files, even the bulkiest ones.
What is the operating system worth?
In terms of operating system, the POCO M5 works with Android 12. Even if the device does not take advantage of the latest version of Android, it can boast of having the penultimate, released less than a year ago. ‘a year. The smartphone embeds the famous MIUI 13 as Android interface. As for voice assistance, it is obviously Google Assistance.
Battery and gaming capabilities
To ensure the autonomy of the device, POCO has equipped it with a non-removable battery of 5000 mAh in wired charging. It should be noted that with this model, we are more on a lithium-polymer model, renowned for its robustness, its lightness and its flexibility. With an estimated charging power of 18 W, it benefits from the fast charging function.
And at my level, the phone recharges in 2h30 max; which is quite interesting! But, I was only able to enjoy it for a whole day, and this through extensive use (taking photos, messages, video games). Speaking of video games, we must not forget that despite its small range, the POCO M5 is designed by gaming.
Aware of this, I decided to test its performance on the eponymous fight game: Mortal kombat. Frankly, I enjoyed myself from the opening of the game, which only lasted 15 seconds! Stunning, but it’s not the most impressive, because I spent almost 30 minutes there and I had lost barely 11% of battery!
In addition, as a mobile gaming enthusiast, I estimate I could still play for 5 hours before the total discharge. We must therefore admit that in terms of gaming, the Smartphone keeps its promises, over a reasonable period of time in any case.
Connectivity, sensors and network
In terms of connectivity, the POCO M5 seems to be well equipped. On the one hand, it benefits from Bluetooth in its 5.3 version and on the other hand from Wi-Fi 5 AC. If it has a jack socket, it also has a USB 2.0 type-C connector.
The device not only has infrared, but also an ambient light sensor, gyroscope, electronic compass and accelerometer.
The POCO M5 is a dual SIM model compatible with nano SIMs. Compatible only with 4G, it is able to support the bands of 2100 MHz (B1), 1800 MHz (B3), 2600 MHz (B7), 800 MHz (B20) and 700 MHz (B28).
