Microsoft will buy Activision for 68.7 billion dollars, but the group has already promised that call of duty would remain available on PlayStation. Today, Bloomberg reveals that the next three games in the saga will indeed be released on Sony consoles, but the future is uncertain.
At least of call of duty on PlayStation until 2023
The next three call of duty which will be released on PlayStation are the episodes of 2022 and 2023, as well as a new version of Call of Duty: Warzone. The games will be available on Sony consoles under an existing agreement between the company and Activision. This commitment will remain in force “for at least the next two years”says Bloomberg, which relies on sources internal to the video game studio.
Regarding the game of 2022, it is developed by Infinity Ward, the studio which proposed Modern Warfare in 2019. For the 2023 game, Treyarch will be in charge, he proposed Black Ops Cold War in 2020. As for Warzone 2it should see the light of day sometime in 2023, but there is no more information about it.
What will happen from 2024?
Now comes the big question: what will happen from 2024? Will Call of Duty leave PlayStation to become an Xbox exclusive? It’s a possibility. Phil Spencer, the boss of Microsoft Gaming, recently indicated that Microsoft has “the intention to honor all existing agreements” and wants “Keep Call of Duty on PlayStation”. Note the use of the terms “existing agreements”. He put call of duty aside, but that remains unclear for the next few years.
Microsoft expects the Activision takeover to close by June 2023, so we still have time before we learn more about the future of call of duty.
