Just released, the N64 Nintendo Switch controller is already out of stock. It will not return to the market until next year.
As of October 26, Nintendo Switch players can subscribe to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, a subscription that gives you access to many N64 and Mega Drive games. For the occasion, Nintendo had also unveiled a pair of N64 and Mega Drive controllers, in every way similar to the controllers of yesteryear, which rocked many players.
These were released at the same time as the expansion subscription, and since then, few models are still in stock. Indeed, the N64 controller in particular has become so popular among Nintendo fans that it is already out of stock. Available only via the manufacturer’s online store, a message displays “currently unavailable”.
No controller for Christmas?
The same goes for the 3-button Mega Drive controller, which cannot be purchased at the moment. It should be remembered that these two controllers are sold at a price of € 49.99 per unit and only to Switch Online + expansion pack subscribers, which should have limited the enthusiasm for the release of the products. Obviously, this was not the case. They are both also unavailable in UK and US.
If the French page of the products does not give more information on the out of stock, the US page does mention a return of stocks by 2022. However, the success of the controllers does not seem to reflect the reviews, mostly negative, of the N64 games playable (or not precisely) on Nintendo Switch.
The fans are back
Indeed, upon its release, the expansion pack received a wave of dissatisfaction from the players, who were offended by the quality of the games offered. Many have taken the example of The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, one of the best games in the Zelda franchise, and one that has been abused with emulation.
Nintendo hasn’t communicated anything about the subscription flop since then, and it looks like things have calmed down with gamers as well. Still, the expansion pack’s presentation trailer is the studio’s least liked video to date on Youtube, so it must be worth something in terms of expression of opinion.
