Tomb Raider will have to find a new Lara Croft, what future for the license?

Lara Croft will experience yet another reboot, this one without Alicia Vikander who had been playing the role since 2018.

Difficult to succeed the legend of Angelina Jolie. After having camped the tomb robber between 2001 and 2003, the American actress had given way to Alicia Vidanker. Since 2018, it is the Swedish actress who played the character in the adaptation of Roar Uthaug, as well as in a second part announced for several months.

Yes but here it is: MGM has lost the rights to the cult Core Design license. The broadcaster has obviously taken too long to deliver the sequel to the adventures of Lara Croft: since last May, Tomb Raider has been on the market again, and it is a bidding war that is being played out in Hollywood.

Alicia Vidanker hangs up the shorts

It is not yet known how the continuation of the franchise will be played, which has not yet found any official buyer. However, one thing seems to have already been decided: the next film Tomb Raider will (still) be rebooted, and will be played without Alicia Vidanker. In addition to the financial considerations which undoubtedly led to the premature end of the saga, it should also be noted that the last film is far from having unanimous support. Critics have been many, and the project has just reached its break-even point, earning only $275 million at the box office despite a nice success in the cinema.

Since the release of the first installment, MGM had already considered a sequel directed by Misha Green (Lovecraft Country). The project was finally abandoned, especially after the acquisition of MGM by Amazon last March, for the modest sum of 8.45 billion dollars. According to The Wrap, Tomb Raider 2 would have finally been canceled in good and due form.

While waiting to see how the cinematographic adventures of Lara Croft will evolve, the license seems to have more luck on the video game side. The Crystal Dynamic studio is now in the hands of Embracer Group after its acquisition from Square Enix. A new game has been confirmed, and is expected to bring many changes to the main character.
