The month of July will not go down in the annals of video games in Europe. Sales of games and consoles have indeed plunged compared to last year, due to a still complicated availability and the lack of big titles.
Where are the European players? On the beach far from their consoles and their PCs, according to the GSD figures for the month of July! Sales of games, whether in their physical or digital version, fell 38% compared to last year, with 8.62 million titles sold. GSD counted 297,420 physical games for consoles sold in July, 48% less than a year ago (console data does not include sales in Germany and the United Kingdom, so this data is to be taken with caution).
Not many new arrivals in July
However, this drop must be qualified: the month of July 2022 had 5 weeks, compared to 4 for July 2022. Despite everything, this remains a low volume. In question, the absence of major new products launched last month. The best seller for July was F1 22, released… in June. The only novelty of the month to enter the top 10 is Xenoblades Chronicles 3 from Nintendo, which grabbed 7th place. Be careful though, the publisher does not publish the sales figures on the eShop, which necessarily has an impact and could raise the RPG several places in the ranking.
At the level of physical sales alone, Nintendo places Xenoblades Chronicles 3 in third place and Switch Sports to the second. F1 22 keep the pole (the racing simulation is number 1 in France, Germany and Italy). The game is a regular in the top places: in July 2021, it was F1 21 who was dominating the rankings! But at the time, the title was released in July, just like The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HDthe big summer title from Nintendo which also played the leading roles in sales.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 won’t be as popular as the remake of Skyward Sword for the Switch, but the franchise’s newest title does 27% better than the Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition of 2020. Console sales are down 26% year-over-year, with Switch being the top seller, mostly due to PS5 and Xbox Series S/X inventory issues.
