To establish this theory, Bruno Bento, author of the research, used the theory of causal sets. In the latter, space and time are fragmented into discrete pieces of space-time. At one level of this theory of quantum gravity, there is a fundamental unity of space-time.

By exploiting it, the scientist and his collaborators discover that the earth may have no beginning. It would have existed for millennia and would have evolved into the Big Bang phenomenon once detected by other scientists.

Merge quantum physics and general relativity

Two theories of quantum gravity are often used to explain the origins of the universe: quantum physics and general relativity. The first offers a successful description at the microscopic scale of electromagnetism, weak force and strong force. As for general relativity, it is the most complete description that gravity has ever conceived. Notwithstanding, the theories it establishes are not valid in the centers of black holes and at the beginning of the universe.

To solve this frustrating problem with quantum gravity, scientists need to make use of the quantum theory of gravity. Also called a microscopic description of strong gravity, it would be used to explain phenomena involving a large amount of matter. This new approach will lead to new theories such as string theory and loop quantum gravity.

The theory of causal sets: what are the implications?

In modern physics theories, space and time are continuous. However, another approach, called causal set theory, describes this perception as a series of discrete pieces or atoms of space-time. For the author of the research, this new discovery gives a central role to time and to what the passing time means.

The philosophy of causal sets therefore contains significant implications for the nature of time. In particular, it allows us to conclude that the passage of time is a manifestation of physical theory that cannot be attributed to emerging illusions. It cannot also be explained by what is happening inside the human brain which gives the impression that time is passing.

The biggest implication of this theory, however, remains the cancellation of the Big Bang singularity, since it cannot exist. It is indeed impossible to affirm that matter is compressed to infinity. Nevertheless, it must be recognized that significant efforts remain to be made by scientists in order to write theories on the complex evolution of the universe.
