Riot Games was slow to launch its huge hit League of Legends on the mobile game market, but the studio hit the jackpot with Wild Rift.
League of Legends is an extremely popular game since its release on Windows in 2009. The title of Riot Games made an incursion on another platform a few years later, on Mac, in 2013. But since then, the MOBA had not tackled d other formats…until the end of 2020. The studio finally gradually launched wild rift on iOS and Android, adapting the game’s gameplay to touch screens.
Nearly a billion dollars in revenue for the studio’s mobile games
And the success is clearly there. According to Sensor Tower, League of Legends: Wild Rift has risen in a year and a half to the top ranks of the most played mobile MOBAs in the world. In the first half of 2022, the title has accumulated nearly $ 220 million in revenue: it’s behind the untouchable Honor of Kings of Tencent (1.2 billion!), but ahead Brawl Stars of Supercell (150 million).
In the case, it is anyway Tencent who picks up the bet, the Chinese group owning both Riot Games and Supercell! 16 months after its launch, Wild Rift has exceeded 500 million dollars in sales (505 million more precisely). It is not, of course, the only mobile game from the studio: it has also been offering since March 2020 Teamfight Tacticswhich is approaching 300 million in revenue.
A month later, Riot Games launched Legends of Runeterra, which generated $24 million in sales. Riot Games’ mobile game catalog has accumulated 828 million. Not so bad for a company that seemed to be reluctant to rub shoulders with this market… The next big mobile game from Riot Games will be Valorant, based on the PC shooter of the same name. With the firepower of Tencent, the money could well flow there too.
