With Intercom, Ring wants to knock out classic building intercoms

At IFA 2022, Ring presented its new solution specifically designed for apartment dwellers. Intercom takes the form of a box to be connected to an intercom in order to receive alerts directly on a smartphone.

Connected doorbells are on the rise, but they mainly target those who have a house. In an apartment, it is not always possible to install such a device and the Ring brand has understood this. At IFA 2022 in Berlin, the American company presented a new solution that specifically targets these users: Intercom.

The new product complements Ring’s line of devices, which include the Video Doorbell Wired and the Video Doorbell 4. Ring Intercom is different and comes in the form of a extension connected via wifi, to be installed yourself on a compatible intercom. The box does not offer a camera or microphone, relying on the existing intercom to make the link with the smartphone. “People living in apartments will now have the ability to respond to their visitors and unlock the entrance to the building, all from the Ring app on their smartphone”explains Amazon, owner of Ring.

Ring thinks of the residents of buildings

The firm is thus betting on the ease of installation and explains that it developed this product following feedback from users. The device operates using a rechargeable battery.

The Ring Intercom comes with various features such as remote unlockthe two-way talk or theshared user. While the first allows you to unlock the door remotely, the second offers to exchange with visitors who ring the doorbell. It is also possible to share access to the Intercom with other members of the household, offering them the possibility of interacting with the system from their smartphone.

The other option is a “automatic verification” system which Ring presents as an optional feature. When activated, it temporarily allows keyless access to visitors “trusted to trusted providers”. Concretely, delivery people will be able to benefit from this novelty to enter the building without having to ring the bell. Unsurprisingly, parent company Amazon will be the first to take advantage of the automatic verification option. Ring assures that an option will be added ” later “ to supply virtual keys to recurring visitors or trust groups. This will be managed from the dedicated application.

The brand does not yet detail the operation of these “virtual keys”, but it ensures that the system will be easily revocable at any time and should avoid providing to share additional keys or badges.

Which intercoms are compatible?

Ring assures that its Intercom device is “compatible with most audio intercom systems”. To check, a compatibility checker is available on the Ring or Amazon sites. It is also possible to go to this address to answer a few questions. This questionnaire confirms in passing that only audio devices are compatible; it is not possible to see visitors from a smartphone.

The Intercom is compatible with certain Alexa devices and will be available in France at the beginning of 2023. Ring has not yet revealed its price for France. On the other hand, we know that it will be offered in Germany at a price of 169.99 euros. Available from the end of the month with our neighbors across the Rhine, it will benefit from an introductory offer at 99.99 euros.
